Ever since I saw some art work (don't recall the artist) made from found metal, I have been intrigued by the metal sculpture.
My earliest memory of welding is my ninth grade friend Jeff using his father’s stick welder to connect the hoods of two 1950’s or 1960’s pickup trucks together to make a boat.
Between the shoddy welding and our body weight, the “boat” sank about twenty minutes after it was launched, and probably remains there to this day. In addition to having to wade out of a muddy, moss filled ditch, I was left with the impression of the welder. So much so, that I tried to make a welder at home. I took an old lamp cord, wrapped one of the wires around a large nail, and the other wire I attached to an empty coffee can. I punched a hole in the side of the can and laced the wire through that. I plugged the cord into the wall outlet, picked up the nail by the insulated wire and touched it to the coffee can. When I was able to see again after the flash, I saw a huge hole burnt into the side of the coffee can and noted the smell of ozone in the air around me.
About ten years ago, rather than repeat my earlier mistake I opted to buy a MIG welder on ebay for around a hundred dollars. For my first project, I bought and scrounged a bunch of cheap tools like wrenches, a hammer, pliers, etc. at the Dollar Store and welded them together into a box shape. Well, once I touched off the welder the first time, I was hooked on putting pieces together to make art. I worked at it off and on for several years, welding and even forging on a coal forge to add to my tool set.
Since retirement, I have been taking art classes for the past two years at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Glassell Studio School focusing on metal sculpture and foundry.
Currently, I am inspired by the work of David Smith, Jim Love, Frank Stella, and Alexander Calder.
To challenge myself to do more, I set up this web site to catalog my work.
Enjoy.
